In 1752, when Holguin obtained the Title of City, it arrived to this city the first Lieutenant Governor arrived to this city with five Franciscan religious, among them the Friar Antonio Joseph Alegre, popularly Alegría who went up a cross to the hill of Bayado or as well it is known by La Cruz Hillock, May 3 of 1790, so that one could observe from different points to Holguin City; Spanish custom of placing in the highest places near the populations a cross with the purpose of avoiding epidemics, witchcraft or natural disasters.

Immediately the citizens began to go up the hill and to request to the cross so that this granted them miracles and May 3 every year the people of Holguin gives beginning to The Romerias de Mayo.

As all the festivities, The Romerias de Mayo is also the result of a social spontaneous manifestation based on feeling of the town of Holguin and in this there’s always a tradition, culture, entertainment and religion part.

In Holguin City during The Romerias de Mayo, the town set off in procession from San Isidoro Church and this went to La Cruz Hillock and in the cross the mass was officiated and later the party that lasted until the other day began. Then the Catholic festivity transcended and they made it other beliefs until transforming into a popular party.

Later on to give bigger splendor to The Romerias de Mayo and to improve the access until the cross, Oscar Albanian Carballo, President of the Catholic Gentlemen, proposed to build a perron, fact that at the moment distinguishes Holguin City.

To achieve this determination it’s made verbenas to collect funds and during 23 years it was building and it was inaugurated the 458 steps finally, an oratory formed by a small square in balcony shape and the cross above a base like an altar, the fort was reconstructed and a rotunda was made, May 3 of 1950.

Nowadays, and starting from the year 1994, The Romerias de Mayo have been rescued for the enthusiasm of young of the Association "Hermanos Saíz" to join the new thing with the old thing, and to make reality its motto "Because there is not today without yesterday."

The Romerias de Mayo begin currently with the beautiful parade of cars from the central park of Holguin City until the Forest of the Heroes (War Memorial) at twelve in the night and the next day in the morning the inaugural parade, which attract to the whole town of Holguin, and takes with it Holguin Axe, and it concludes with a concert in the summit of La Cruz Hillock.

Simply, whole Holguin is a party up to May 8 at night when it’s lowered Holguin Axe and hoisted it to the highest building in the new part of Holguin City, and sows a tree so that this tradition goes on growing.

Every year in the month of May with The Romerias de Mayo the tradition and the modernity are conjugated to transform from that way to Holguin City into the Capital of the Young Art, submitting a sample of the most representative thing of the national and international culture, besides the best projects in the Association "Hermanos Saíz" of each county of Cuba.
