Holguin’s Parks, not only those of the center, but also the existent ones in the different residential areas as that of New Town, Vista Alegre, Luz y Peralta, constitute relief and relaxation spaces and, why not?, of culture.
This system of public squares conserves until our days, another of the legacies of the Laws of Indies, since four of it possess the arcades’ group that established this legislation, for the placement of the traveling salespersons and like tropical solution before the rain and the strong sun that takes a bath to the Spanish American countries.
This has made that Holguin has also been known as "The City of the Corridors", common characteristic in many of the Cuban cities that not only possess it around squares but throughout streets and avenues.
An interesting aspect of the Holguin’s Parks that are located in its historical and urban center is the peculiarity that the same ones were projected in high in connection with the level of the streets, to which it is necessary to, enters by means of steps.
This detail considers that it is because it was necessary to lower the roads so that the waters could run in time of rains that, with impressive force, they got off the northern hills and to avoid also that they penetrated in the properties.
Later on when being built the aqueduct, the sewer system and the paving of the same ones, the difference of these with relations to the properties and Parks was evidenced even more.
It is necessary to add that the rocky firm in this area is to scarce 2 meters deep, for what it also considers that to achieve the gardening and tree-lined included in the same ones, it was necessary to stuff with fertile earth, solution that it suppose was applied in the XIX century, when the public squares for the first time were remodeled with beautiful architectural projects.
In a first moment the public squares of Holguin City were blocks demarcated for the primitive functions of the city of then, without any type of urban furniture, and already in the XIX century, when these are intervened, they lost its original spaces, when being defined its enclosures in connection with the streets and sidewalks that frame it; in spite of it, the Holguin’s Parks stand out for its big dimensions.
The modern life has not prevented that these traditional areas continue being for the current generations the most important point in the development of the urban activity. Still today the public crowds round around the Municipal Band to listen the concerts of Thursdays and Sundays in the Calixto García Park, the children play together to the statues of the Major Generals Calixto Garcia, while young and adults converses, they falls in love and takes the cool air at any hour of the day and night.
